The Progress Continues
After a hard-fought run to second in the Constructors' Championship last year, the team emerged from 2023 and a period of renewal stronger and more determined than ever. The W15, our 2024 challenger, improved some of the previous car's inherent architectural limitations. After building an understanding of our new machine in the opening races, the team is now rapidly bringing performance to the track and pushing us into the fight at the front.
Launch
Launch day – one of our busiest but favourite days of the year. The culmination of months of hard work at Brackley and Brixworth was revealed to the world at Silverstone. For this year there was a new livery and colour scheme for fans around the world to enjoy. The black of 2023 remained but was joined by our more traditional silver.
First Race - Bahrain
It had been 96 days since the curtain had come down on the end of 2023, but it was finally time to get back to doing what we all love. After three days testing in Sakhir a week prior, W15 made its race debut at the 2024 Bahrain Grand Prix, 15 years after our Team had returned to F1 as a works team at the same circuit.
Miami Upgrades
The first noticeable upgrade package for 2024 appeared on W15 in Miami, after a tremendous effort from both factories to design and deliver the parts two races ahead of schedule. A new floor was introduced and both drivers were able to see an immediate difference in performance.
On a Roll to Pole
Further updates in Imola and Monaco help the team make yet more progress. The behaviour of the W15 improves. The drivers finding it much more pliable. It doesn't immediately yield an upturn in results... until Canada. A stunning lap on Saturday from George nets pole position. A fighting drive on Sunday from the Brit sees the team take its first podium of the season.
The Breakthrough
The return to Europe for the Spain, Austria, Great Britain triple-header would be a true test of our development. Lewis' third place in Barcelona, his first trip to the podium of 2024, was promising. What followed was more than that. Victory in Spielberg for George, our first win as a team since late 2022, sparked delighted scenes. And one week later? An emotional record-breaking ninth home race win for Lewis at Silverstone. There was not a dry eye in the house.
Heading into Summer in Style
Another podium in sweltering Budapest preceded a stunning Spa weekend. A measured drive from George on the one-stop strategy saw him lead home a one-two finish. That joy would be short-lived though, with his car failing post-race weight checks. The disappointment was palpable but with Lewis taking the victory, and thus giving the team its third wins from fours races, the team entered the Summer Shutdown on a high.
Post-Summer Struggles
Results immediately after the summer break unfortunately did not match those before it, but George did pick up a P3 finish in Baku. Junior driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli got his first taste of an FP1 session at Monza, and was announced for 2025 alongside George a day later. In Singapore, the team celebrated the 50th anniversary of Title and Technical Partner PETRONAS in style, with a special emerald green-inspired livery.
Upgrades in the USA
F1 returned in Austin, and there was a slightly updated W15 for Lewis and George to drive over the Americas triple-header, but both struggled at COTA. It was a similar story in Mexico, before the rain played havoc in São Paulo the following weekend, where George took a strong P4. In Las Vegas, George stormed to his third F1 win after starting on pole in Nevada. A stunning drive from Lewis from P10 to second secured our marque’s 60th one-two in F1.
Thank You, Lewis
After 246 races, six world drivers’ titles, eight Constructors’ titles, 84 wins, 78 pole positions, and 153 podiums together, Lewis bid farewell to Mercedes in Abu Dhabi. He signed off in typically determined and swashbuckling style, charging to P4 from P16 before taking the applause of the crowd on the pit straight after the race. A fitting end to the most successful driver-team partnership in F1. Our campaign slogan for the weekend and days after read: ‘Every Dream Needs a Team’, and nothing epitomised those words more than the previous 12 seasons.
